Winter can be tough on lawns. Dave shows you how to give your lawn the tender loving care it needs to become the wonderful green carpet you'd like for the summer months.

[Music Playing] Hi I am David Epstein and it is spring and my lawn does not look so good and I am a big lawn guy. So, I want to do something called over seeding. Basically, what you do is you clean up the lawn, as fast as you can and you take away any of the leaves and the sticks and you want to kind of loosen things up a bit. Why am I doing that, because I want to create an area for the seed to go down in and make contact with the soil. The next thing I want to do is select my grass. Now, I have parts of lawn that are in deep shade all year, and other parts that are in sun. So, because I have two different areas of lawn, I may choose to seed one area with deep shade and another area with the sun shade mixture. More is not necessarily better here. If you put too much seed down when the seed down, when the seed pollinates it is going to compete with each other. So you need some of the seeds spread out a little bit. On the back of many of the bags of seed that you buy, it will tell you where to set your spreader out and it will say seeding rates over seeding lawns or new lawns. You want the over seeding rate, and we are just going to go over the area that I once seeded. What about fertilizer? Here is a very important point; you do not want to put down a fertilizer that has a preemergent in it that is not made specifically for a new lawn. So something organic like corn gluten, it stops crag grass, you do not under any circumstances want to put that down if you seeded it, because the corn gluten cannot discriminate between your grass seed that you want to come up and the bad weed seeds that you do not want to come up. So, you want to use a fertilizer for a new lawn or use fertilizer that does not have a preemergent in it. You can use a fall fertilizer they tend to work pretty well for new lawns and you want to be sure that that fall fertilizer does not have anything that stops weeds from coming up, because again that will stop the grass seed from coming up. Mother Nature should in the spring provide you with enough water, if it gets dry for many, many days at a time you could sprinkle this a little bit and eventually, the new little grass plants will come up and you will have a lush green lawn all summer long.
