Now we are going to talk about trying to steal third base. A lot of people think stealing third base is easier than second base; it just depends on the speed and the reactions of your player.
Couple of things that we look for, first thing is a lot of pitchers are what we call one lookers. What does that mean? That means when the pitcher comes set and checks the runner at second base; he looks once, then looks away and then delivers the ball. We love those guys. They are much easier to steal off of than guys that vary their looks, if he looks and looks back, that's a much harder time to steal. What we do in this situation is we normally take our step back, take our left, right and two slides and then we step up back up into the baseline. Because it's a shorter distance in a straight line than it is for dipper.
As soon as the pitcher looks back and looks away, we take two shuffles, one, two and then go to third base right away. The reason we do that is because there is a delay between when the pitcher looks back and looks home, we are taking our shuffles now as he lifts his leg and goes. So we get a little jump on his momentum to the plate. And that's what we do when we are trying to steal third base.
