Jim’s garden tip is brought to you by Zamzows, nobody knows like Zamzows. An important part of early summer maintenance is thinning, pruning, and early harvest. I'm going to start off by demonstrating how to thin corn. To get two good ears on one stalk of corn, you really should have it eight to 12 inches apart. So, I'm just going to very gently pull this one out. And that gives those plenty of room to grow up. Now, this is my black zucchini hill and through the season I've been pulling out the weaker plants. I'm now down to three strong plants but you can see that they are still too thick to yield properly. So, I'm going to have to remove one of these plants and I've chosen this smaller one here in the middle. That will allow more room for these two plants to expand. Now, as these cucumbers get a little larger, I'm going to train them to go up these trails. But for cucumbers to do the best and to give you the heaviest yields, they should be about eight to 12 inches apart. Onions and radishes should be thinned through the season. That will allow your onions to get very large. But if they're too close together, they won’t. I'm going to summer harvest these scallions. That’s what we call an immature onion. The same is true for radishes, excellent eating all season long. The thing about radishes is you should plant them about every two weeks so you’ve got to continuous supply. Radishes are ready in about 21 days and they're only good then for about a week before you should harvest them. And the way you prune a tomato is by removing the suckers and actually train your plant back to just a few main stems. Right off to the side here in the crotch of the leaf, that’s what we call a sucker. So, I'm just going to take my knife ready in here very carefully and I'm just going to remove that sucker. Join me next week and I'll show you how to make a magic compost tea that will jumpstart your garden like nothing else will.
