Tips from Ron Caruthers, CEO of College Planning Inc.
If you are getting ready to send in college admission's application essays in the next couple of months, let me give you something that you are going to want. In fact, I will give you three specific things that you need to do, the three biggest mistakes that I have seen most students do in their essays.
Number one is read your essay out loud before you are done with it. So you are going to see a lot of grammar mistakes or you used short sentences, things that don't really work out the way you would normally use them and just awkward to type vocabulary, or weird grammar, that you are not going to use in the real world. That's your tip number one.
Tip number two, when you are actually sitting down to write, write. Don't waste so much of time trying to get ready to get ready. Set a start time for your writing, set an end time for your writing, and when you are sitting down, write.
If you want a reference book to help you with your essay, probably the best, for the shortest amount of time that you'll spend reading it is Harry Bauld's book called On Writing the College Application Essay. It's classic, and it's short to the point, and you'll spend a couple of hours reading it, but it will be way better than spending a bunch of time trying to figure out everything on your own.
The third and final tip is, give yourself plenty of time. Don't wait till the last minute to handle this. Write your essay, put up your draft together, and set it aside for a few days, and then come back, and work on it later.
