New construction windows can be installed in new or existing construction. In this segment, we will go over the steps to install a new construction window in block type construction. Installing in block construction is not that different from installing in-framed construction. The main difference is in the treatment of the rough opening. Basically, we install strips of wood called buck strips to the inside of the block opening. We then install the window to the buck strips. Installing a window and block construction requires just basic carpentry skills. On a scale of one to five with five being very difficult, this project is about, a two and a half. Always ensure that you have the following tools and supplies when, installing a window and block construction. A carpenter’s pencil, circular saw, hand saw, carpenter’s level, masonry screws or concrete fasteners, impact driver, hammer drill, utility knife, tape measure and safety glasses. Okay, let’s see how we install a window and block construction. First, if buck strips are not present, install them on either side of the window opening and both top and bottom. Buck strips can vary by region and building code. In this project, we’re using pressure-treated two by fours as the material for the buck strips. Apply cock between the buck strips and the block. Install the strips with concrete fasteners, or in this case we’re using masonry screws driven into pre-drilled holes with an impact driver. Measure the rough opening from the edge of the buck strip to the edge of the opposite buck strip. Measure horizontally in three places and use the smallest measurement. Measure in three places vertically and use the smallest measurement. Use these measurements to order a new window. Now, push the window in from the outside, bottom first. Shim the windows so that it is square, level and plum in the opening. Fasten the window frame to the buck. In this case, the window has a nail fin. Drive roofing nails into the nail fin all the way around the window. Finally, seal between the window frame and the rough opening or buck opening. Then, finish the window trim as needed with window casing.
