Eiffel Tower, located at the far end of the Champ-de-Mars by the Seine. The Eiffel Tower has become one of the symbols of France, Paris, and even Europe. Nevertheless, this is a recent monument. It was built by Gustave Eiffel for the Exposition Universal Trade Fair of 1889 and was intended to demonstrate the utility and aesthetics of material such as iron in architecture. In fact, over 7,000 tons of iron were used to build this 1,000 foot tower. Of course, from the summit you have the whole of Paris at your feet. Just a thought for when you are up there, the tower relies on a system of hydraulic jacks. That's to say, it rests on water.
