Hi, I’m Dave Epstein with growing wisdom and today I want to tell you about a product called Sluggo. And I have got major damage to some of my ornamental leaves at the edge of the garden. The slugs have eaten holes in these leaves and really, they are not very attractive anymore. I’ve been using this product for years and you might say to yourself; “Well, Dave if you have been using the products for years, why do you have so much damage?” Unfortunately, if you don’t stay on top of this, as I have not this year, that’s what happens but if you us the product every couple of weeks, you won’t have the damage. I’ve been using the product in my vegetable garden and that’s been a lot more successful. I don’t have nearly the number of slugs around my vegetable garden, we have bee eating lettuce for weeks and weeks and weeks and part of the reason, the lettuce hasn’t been destroyed and it’s been a wet year, is because I’ve been using this product.
You might also say; “Wait a second why are you using this product amongst food?” Well, this product is OMRI listed which is the Organic Materials Review Institute. And those of you that do organic gardening probably have heard of that. You can use this product right up to the day of harvesting your garden.
So how does it work? Well basically, the slugs eat the product then they stop feeding, you may still see them around your garden for several days and eventually, they’ll go away to die. And the other great thing about the product is you can start using this product anytime you begin to see slugs or snails around your garden. The most successful way to use the product is to apply it when the ground is damp and also, don’t leave it in standing water or leave piles of the product around. You want to have the little granules scattered. Use about a teaspoon per square yard 3x3 foot area and one pound is going to cover a thousand square feet so that’s a pretty big size for just a pound of this.
