Lorie Kane is a professional golfer with a family history of osteoarthritis. But she wont’ let aches and pains get in the way of her game; find out what she is doing to keep active with arthritis.

Martin Vanderwoude: Lorie Kane knows what it takes to win. Lorie Kane: I think my success comes from not being afraid to make some sacrifices. Martin Vanderwoude: She is one of Canada's foremost golfers and winner of 4 LPGA titles. The veteran athlete is setting herself up for a continued success on the professional tour, keeping the majors within reach, but it's not just golf that drives her. Lorie Kane: My dad always said, dream big dreams and both mom and dad have always taught us as kids and as adults, to leave whatever you found better. My relationship with my mom is a unique one, you know. I have learned from her how to manage myself in front of the public and to be comfortable with who I am in that regard. My mom suffers from osteoarthritis and it doesn't slow her down and I hope that what I have learned from mom is to keep moving, keep active. Martin Vanderwoude: Kane credits her success to rigorous practice, natural talent at a dedicated fitness regime and because there is a genetic link in some forms of osteoarthritis, she is not taking chances. Physical activity is recommended by the Canadian Arthritis Society as an effective way to decrease pain. With her strategy in place, she is not worried about the future. Lorie Kane: I am 43 years old. The average age on tour has gone down significantly. Young women are turning pro at a much earlier age than I did and 3 or 4 years ago, I decided that, you know, I needed to lose some weight. I needed to get in better shape. I was obviously going to have some aches and pains, as I got older. Osteoarthritis runs in my family. I needed to make sure that I was going to do the things that would allow me longevity in my career. With doctor's supervision, I have tried Celebrex and it has worked. So I just started to get back into a better, healthy living and what I mean by that is, a better diet, more exercise. Martin Vanderwoude: Regardless of your physical condition, you should be proactive about your health. It's never too soon to develop a program that includes exercise and proper diet.
