Most of us think of our home as a safe haven but there are many household items that can be a danger to our pets.
The kitchen is one of the most commonly used grooms in the house and it could have some of the most hazardous items for your dog and cat. Foods, such as avocado, nuts, onions, raisins, grapes, and chocolate can be fatal for certain pets. Chicken bones and alcohol should also be kept away.
Many dogs and cats are able to get on the kitchen counter tops. So it is best to keep all foods out of reach.
Exposed garbage cans are often targets for hungry pets. Spoiled foods as well as trash can contain items that may make your pets very ill. The best way to keep your pets out of the garbage is to hide it securely away. A secured baby gate can also be helpful in keeping your dogs out of the kitchen.
Foods are not the only dangerous lurking in your kitchen, cleaning products and human medications can be very harmful to pets. It is always best to keep these products stored and out of reach. When taking medication make sure to pick up any pills that may have fallen. Pets can become fatally ill by swallowing even small doses of common medications or vitamins.
The kitchen is not the only place pets can get into trouble. The garbage can contain many temptations for curious dogs and cats. If you store your excess garbage in the garage, keep pets away. If you store items such as fertilizers, gas cans, and ice salts, make sure they are out of reach. Anti-freeze is also very dangerous. The taste is very sweet and a small dose can kill your pet. So remember to clean up any spills.
