Replacing a Home’s Exterior Light Fixture
By HomeAdditionPlus.com
Good morning, my name is Mark Donovan from HomeAdditionPlus.com and it is a gorgeous day here at Lake Winnipesaukee in Central New Hampshire but today, I am going to show you how to replace an exterior light.
First thing we want to do after turning the power off the light at the circuit panel box is remove the light from the outlet box. With the light fixture now off of the assembly bracket, we just simply remove the nut or nuts to disconnect the light.
Now that we have removed the light from the wall, we are going to install a light mounting assembly on the clapboard so that the lights sits plum with the side of the wall. Now, we are going to secure the mounted light kit to the wall with the help of screws, with the wires, the ground and the hot return coming out to the center hole.
Now, we are going to attach the light bracket assembly to the side mounting kit. We basically put it over the location of the screw holes and attach it to the side kit. With the bracket firmly secured to the side mounting kit, we now adjust the movable part of the bracket so that it sits parallel with the ground. And we just tighten up the screw here to do that, and now we are ready to wire the new light fixture to this side kit.
The first thing I like to do is attach the ground wire of the light fixture itself to the ground wire coming out of the light box assembly. We simply use a wire nut and screw it on.
Now with the ground wire attached to the light feature itself, we want to attach the wire nuts to the return in the hot wire leads.
Now that we have all the wires attached, we simply put the light fixture itself on to the side mounting kit and screw on the finished nuts on to the light fixture itself. All that is left to do now is to put in the light bulb, and there we go. We have completed our light installation. It took only about 30 minutes, very simple project to do.
Just remember from a safety standpoint, you want to make sure you turn power off the light switch before you start working on any type of electricity.
