Host: So today we are at the fire station, where we will be talking with the Director and the Division Chief about fire prevention; what you need to know, what the biggest mistakes people make are, what your kids need to know in the case of a fire. We are also going to be heading over to a daycare next door where they are doing a surprise fire drill, and they are going to see how the kids react, how the teachers react, and what they can do better to make sure that everyone gets out safe. What is the purpose of fire prevention awareness? 1. Christian Grand'Maison: There are two goals that we try to reach: we want to save lives and we want people to develop safe habits. Host: What is the key to being safe at home? Christian Grand'Maison: Changing batteries and the smoke detector once a year. Martin Tétreault: You can make an evacuation plan with their parents and see how they could evacuate the building safely and and go to a meeting place. Host: What should we be sure that children know in the case of a fire? Martin Tétreault: All kids like their pets and there is a fire, there is a tendency to look for their pets before they evacuate. That's what we tell them in the campaign, don't look for your pet, go outside and save your life, that's the main thing. Christian Grand'Maison: Kids, when they find matches, give them to your parents, that's really important. Host: We all know about the first aid kit, so is their a fire kit that we should have in our home? Martin Tétreault: Well, fire extinguisher, we recommend that every house should have one, and a smoke detector on each floor of the building. Host: What should you do if you smell smoke in your home? Christian Grand'Maison: Well, the first thing is that you have to get out of your home, tell everybody to get out, and go to your neighbor's house and call the 911. Host: How do you get out of a home that's actually on fire, a major, major fire. Martin Tétreault: There is a lot of smoke, is to crawl down on your knees and scream fire, and tell everybody to get out. Host: What do you do if you catch on fire? Christian Grand'Maison: Well, we call it the stop, drop, and roll. You stop running, you cover your eyes with your hands, you drop on the ground and you roll yourself. Host: How do you develop a fire drill for your family, what should be the steps that you should go through? Christian Grand'Maison: Well, first of all, you have to do a plan of your house, and after that you have to indicate three things on your ground: two exits for each piece of the house, the location of the fire extinguisher, and you have to indicate a family meeting place outside the house. Be sure that every member of the family know the plan, and finally, practice, practice, and practice it again. Host: We are heading over to the daycare next door, can you tell me about what we are about to do there? Martin Tétreault: What I am going to do is I will put a false station on the fire alarm panel and watch the evacuation. Host: Thank you for speaking with us, and we will see you at the drill.
