Yoga is not a sport. Yoga is not a competition. Yoga is not a religion. Yoga is a tool to help you live better and to help you surf better. As surfers, we thrive on the energy of the ocean. We feel totally alive when we connect with the power of the waves and awaken the essence of our being. And when we can’t get in into the water, we grow restless and out of sort and start to wonder what kind of shape we’ll be in the next time we get to surf. Thankfully, we can turn to yoga to bring our minds and bodies back into balance. Hi. I’m Peggy Hall. If you’ve seen Yoga for Surfers volume 1, then you know that yoga is an excellent physical and mental preparation for surfing and for life. Top pro surfers Rochelle Ballard and Taylor Knox have practiced yoga for years. And now, they join me in fluid power yoga. I created this challenging routine based on a rigorous type of Hatha yoga called the Vinyasa flow. That means that each pose is linked together in a fluid powerful sequence. It’s a multilevel routine so you can continue to challenge yourself as you grow stronger and more flexible. We’ll start first by warming up the spine and learning correct breathing. Then will start the Vinyasa flow where we’ll keep building one pose on to another to really challenge our bodies and minds as we develop persistence, fortitude and concentration. Then, we’ll practice some balancing poses to work our core and our mental focus and we’ll finish with some wonderful relaxation poses which allow the body to heal and rejuvenate. Be sure to breathe deeply and slowly throughout this practice. Your breath is your energy so keep it flowing. If you’re new to yoga or recovering from an injury, remember to go at your own pace and rest if you need to. There is no perfect pose in yoga. There is only the practice. And if you approach it with persistence and patients, you’ll experience some remarkable changes in your body, your mind and your soul. You’ll feel better, look better, surf better and live better. You’ll discover your own sea of inner strength and power and develop an energy and radiance that will spread to all areas of your life.
