How To Add Water to a Car Battery

Keeping the water of your car battery at a constant level will help make it last longer, because the water's electrolytes will help in keeping your battery charged, and prevent deterioration of the car battery cells. Knowing how to check your car battery's water level and how to add water to it will also help save you trips to the auto mechanic shop. Here is how you add water to a car battery:

  1. Clean the top of the car battery first. Dirt and debris that may enter the insides of the car battery may damage it, so clean it first before inspecting the water level. You can use a mixture of one cup water and one tablespoon of baking soda to clean the surface of the battery. Don't forget to include the cables when you clean the battery's surface but make sure to disconnect it from the car battery before cleaning it using a brush.
  2. Check the water level of the car battery. Once you are done cleaning the surface of the battery, remove the battery caps.  If the level is low, then you need to replace it with distilled water. Distilled water, not tap water, is required to ensure that there won't be any contradiction with the electrolyte levels inside the battery.
  3. Pour distilled water in the car battery. Pour the distilled water until you reach the full level mark, but for batteries without any markings, make sure that the water never reaches the bottom of the battery caps once you screw it back in. Make sure that it will not overflow, because when it does, it may cause damage and corrosion to your car's motor parts due to the acid content. After you are done adding distilled water, safely secure the battery caps back.

Routinely checking your car battery's water level will help lengthen its life, and minimizing the risks of your car battery failing on you. If you have a newer battery, check the water level at least twice every three months, and if your battery is older than a year and a half, check it once a week. Take into consideration the weather, because you might have to add water frequently during the summer.
