How To Become a Millwright

Millwright at work

A millwright is a fairly general term describing an individual who works with heavy equipment in a variety of fields including manufacturing and construction.  Millwrights perform a variety of duties including operating cranes, forklifts, and bulldozers, installing machinery, and ensuring that machinery is working efficiently and troubleshooting if it is not.  Millwrights are often required to read architectural plans, and become familiar with high tech equipment.  Millwrights often join local unions and can earn a comfortable salary and receive generous benefits.  This article will give you step and hints into how to become a millwright.
The first step in how to become a millwright is getting a proper education.  Most millwrights at a minimum will need to have a high school diploma or equivalency.  While in high school you should take every elective shop or construction class that you can.  Becoming a good millwright requires years of practice with heavy machinery, so getting familiar with heavy equipment early will be beneficial.  After high school, you should consider going to a trade school or community college to receive a deeper education and possibly a degree.

Once you are done with your education, the next step in how to become a millwright is to find a mentor in the field and become their apprentice.  By working in the field, you will gain valuable firsthand experience, and be molded into a millwright through criticism and leadership provided by an experienced millwright.  As an apprentice, you won’t earn much money, but you will gain training hours that are often required in order to be certified as a millwright.
After working as a millwright apprentice for a couple years, the next step in becoming a millwright is to join a union.  The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America will be able to point you in the right direction in finding a local union.  Once you have found a union and obtained a position, you may be required to go through a training program before you are allowed to work independently.
While working as a millwright you should do everything you can to work with as many different machines as possible.  In today’s environment, millwrights are becoming less needed and machines and computers continue to replace humans in the factories.  The further your knowledge goes, the more irreplaceable you will make yourself.
Another step in becoming a millwright is to continue your education.  As time goes by, newer advanced machinery and practices will come into the marketplace.  To ensure that you are staying ahead of the game, you should do your best to take courses part time at technical colleges.  To further your career, you should become an expert with newer technology and get in the habit of training other millwrights.
