How To Become an Arborist

Arborist profession

An arborist makes sure they keep shrubs and other plant-life healthy, but it is trees to which they pay the most attention. Wherever there is plant life, there will always be a need for an arborist in the area. Maintaining and preserving plant-life is important, as they provide shade for people in the hot summers and they filter our air. With so much pollution and contaminated oxygen, preserving plant-life could not be more important. Arborists also work in the landscaping field a lot, making sure real estate and commercial properties are looking their best. Keeping trees healthy is at times a complicated task and needs someone who is certified in this area.

To become an arborist, you must be certified. This is because the job requires far more than just planting seeds and cutting hedges. An arborist must also climb trees and participate in dangerous activities. Here is how to become an arborist.

Take the Right Courses - If you are interested in becoming an arborist, you might want to take an interest in arboriculture, which is the study of trees and how they grow. This is where you learn every little detail about taking care of trees, and it involves risky tree climbing well into the branches. You will be providing care for trees and other plant-life in cities, for organizations, on real estate property and commercial estates. In some cases, you will need to learn when and how to remove branches to preserve the overall health of the tree. Learning whether a tree is insect-infested or diseased is also a common skill most arborists needs to know.

Get Certified - An arborist needs to be certified in order to work in this field. Taking care of trees is not a simple task, and you will need to learn the specific details on doing so. The typical place to study for becoming an arborist is at a two or four year college that offers this program.  It also requires getting a degree in the horticulture or arboriculture field.

Join Arborist Associations - After you attain a degree from a regional accredited college, you should join the arborist associations such as the Tree Care Industry of America and the ASCA or America Society of Consulting Arborists. This is to get certification from the International Society of Arboriculture.  You will have an option of five different licenses that you can get: Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Worker, Municipal Specialist or ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist. The ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist is the highest form of certification.
