How To Construct a Career Objective for a Resume

As job applicant your chance of getting hired depends mostly on your resume. A potential employer understandably wants someone with qualifications that will suit the requirements of the job on hand. Hence you must write a fabulous resume by including your career objective.

But what exactly is a career objective? It is a statement that summarizes your goals, expectations and vision in your personal career in relation to the job you are applying for. It is usually found at the first part of the resume. The purpose of including a career objective is to draw the attention of the employer and to persuade him to read everything in your resume – and perhaps consider hiring your services.

To construct a career objective for a resume, use these tips:

  • Decide what work you wish to land in a company. Mull over the career path you want to establish when hired by the organization. Visualize yourself in the position and how you will contribute worthy inputs to your prospective job. After considering all these factors and determining what you really want – you are ready to write your career objective.
  • Specify your objective. Avoid generalizations such as: “Be the best of what I can be” or “To be able to help foster growth in the textile industry”. Not only are these clichés, they are vague as well and the employer will not be able to appreciate your real intentions.
  • Analyze your qualifications. Are you really fit for your dream job? Do you have the needed talent and skill to execute your duties? Be realistic and honest to yourself as you make a self-evaluation. If the job available is that of a teacher who has had at least five years teaching experience and you are just fresh from college – drop the plan. Accept that you are not qualified for the job and look for another prospect somewhere else.
  • State your objective directly. Do not beat around the bush by explaining or justifying your reasons for your application. Remember that the less you say, the easier you will be understood.
  • Adapt your career objective to the position you are applying for. It is possible that you plan to submit several cover letters and resumes to different companies for different posts. Modify the career objective in each resume based on the position you are seeking in a particular group. For example, you want to apply as an executive secretary at Company A, as a pre-school teacher at Company B and as a public relations officer at Company C. Write an independent and specific career objective for each application.
  • Make your career objective short but concise. One or two sentences will be enough. However make sure the meaning and clarity of the objective is not sacrificed by the brevity of the statements.
  • Mind your grammar, syntax, spelling, phrasing and overall construction of the sentences. Take note that the career objective that normally precedes the rest of the resume, is the first thing that an employer will read in your cover letter. Do not forget that a first impression matters a lot.

Including a career objective in your resume truly helps a lot in building your desired image and impression on the employer. However the downside of stating your career objective is that the employer might think your abilities are limited only by what is stated in your objective. For a remedy, try to include a sweeping phrase such as: “willing to explore other areas related to my field”. With this assertion, the employer will start to picture you as a versatile and well-rounded individual who can be an asset to the company.
