How To Write a Biography for Work

A professional or career biography is just a more interesting presentation of your resume. Instead of detailing your skills and achievements in bullet form, you get to describe what you have to offer in a more reader-friendly way. Typically used by people whose credentials do not look good in the traditional resume format, this can also be used by business owners who want to creatively showcase their work.

Here are some things to remember before writing your professional biography.

  • Remember that a professional biography is about your work history and skills that you could offer a company. Do not include personal stuff, such as your love life, in the biography. Keep everything professional.
  • Limit your biography to only one page. Since you are not writing in bullet form, the one reviewing your application would not want to read anything beyond the first page. Keep your biography short and simple.
  • Your introduction should be brief and should include personal information, your educational attainment and goals in life. If you have any certifications or dissertations, do not forget to write them down.
  • The second paragraph should be about your present employment status, whether you are looking for a career change, or been in a freelance job for a while.
  • The next paragraph should be the bulk of your biography. Here, you must expound on your expertise and work experience. Include past major jobs. Write about skills and knowledge you have gained. Any achievements and awards you have garnered over the years can also be included here.
  • Also, list down any noteworthy affiliations you might have. Employers might know or want to gain alliances with these affiliations, which might increase your chances of getting hired.
  • Finally, in the last paragraph, write down some unique skills you have that might be beneficial for the company. Also include your work ethic in this paragraph.
  • In writing your career biography, do not forget to write in the third person. Instead of saying, "I am currently..." you should say "Mike is currently..." This makes your biography sound more professional.
  • Do not forget to include your contact information and your picture. Just like in any regular resume, your employer would want to know where you are from and how to reach you if he decides to hire you.
  • Try to look for other people's career biographies and compare your sample with theirs. You may find some things that seem lacking or in excess. It would also be helpful to find someone who would review your biography honestly.
  • Spell-check and look for grammatical errors. Nothing turns employers off more than badly written biographies.
