How To Install a TV Signal Amplifier

Outdoor TV antennas

To increase the picture quality and filter the noise of your television frequency bands, a TV signal amplifier placed at the antenna output can help you get the ideal reception that your antenna alone cannot provide you. For residential television systems two kinds of signal amplifiers are available – the preamplifier and the distribution amplifier. The former is usually referred to as ‘preamp’ or ‘booster’. This kind of amplifier is composed of the actual amplifier that is set at the antenna and the power supply inside the house. This is generally ideal for reception with snowy or granular pictures. The latter is the kind of amplifier that is usually used to distribute television signals to multiple locations. Distribution amplifiers can have one or more splitters built right into the amplifiers. They can be designed to boost off-air broadcast channels or off-air and cable channels.

The following are tips on how to install a signal amplifier.

  1. Signal boosters or amplifiers have step-by-step installation guide with accompanying drawings to help you correctly set up your TV or cable amplifier, and achieve best results. Follow the installation manual for specific instructions.
  2. Typically, the input cable is connected to the TV or the VCR. Detach the cable and connect it to the signal input on the signal amplifier.
  3. Using at least a six-foot coaxial cable, connect the signal output of the amplifier to your TV or VCR input.
  4. Use another six-foot coaxial cable to connect the adapter to the signal amplifier.
  5. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
  6. Test the signal quality of your television by checking all channels. A portable TV can be very handy when you are till finding the best spot for your booster location.
  7. Signal boosters are best installed as near as possible to your cable entrance or antenna. However, in cases where you need to use a signal amplifier for several television units, place it in close proximity to the antenna splitter. If you only have to amplify the signal for one unit, have the signal booster installed near your television.
  8. You can either mount the signal amplifier to an interior wall or lay it flat. Do not however point it through walls, lighting circuits or other obstructions.
  9. Should you need to install the signal booster outside your house, use a rubber boot to help shield the connectors from weather damage such as rain, snow, or UV rays.

The efficiency of your television signal amplifier is largely dependent on its design and location of installation. Some are best indoors while others are ideal outdoors. Consider the obstructions near your place such as trees, walls, pipes, tanks, and buildings among many others that may result in a poor television signal or other reception problems. Hence it is imperative to understand your requirements in order to choose the appropriate booster. Prior to purchasing your TV signal booster, refer to a professional or technician in case you have meager knowledge on splitter amplifier, signal splitter, voltage amplifier and the likes. You can also call a service technician to do the installation for you.
