How To Keep Fit and Healthy During Pregnancy

Keeping fit and healthy during pregnancy is essential for many different reasons. Besides being beneficial to the unborn baby and providing he or she with all the vitamins and nutrients they need to be born healthy, keeping healthy and fit during pregnancy helps the mom to be happier and able to withstand some of the symptoms of pregnancy better. There are some easy tips you can follow for how to stay fit and healthy during pregnancy.

  1. To begin with be sure to get in and see a doctor or a midwife as soon as possible. They help determine how far along you are and are able to give you professional advice and answers to any questions or concerns that you may have about pregnancy and childbirth. As the pregnancy progresses they will also be able to keep an eye on the baby by checking its heartbeat and doing ultrasounds for those who choose.
  2. Next you should eat healthy. Some women take to the old saying about eat for two and run with it. While you do need some extra calories, you do not need to really eat for two people. By simply adding a glass or two of regular milk to your diet you are getting the proper amount of extra calories you need plus the extra calcium you need. If you find yourself craving foods that you know are not healthy for you or that are high in calories, allow yourself a small portion but then put the rest away or throw it away so you will not be tempted. There are certain foods you should avoid altogether such as sushi and certain soft cheeses so be sure to ask your doctor or midwife if you have any questions.
  3. Be sure to get out there and exercise. While there are certain activities you should avoid, many women find themselves able to keep up with exercise regimes well into their third trimester as long as they are careful not to get overheated. Some exercises that are very beneficial to pregnant women include going for walks or swimming. If you are pregnant during the winter time you can look for an indoor track to walk at or a local indoor heated pool like at your local YMCA. Exercising not only makes recovery easier after you give birth but many women claim it helps prepare them for labor and delivery as well.
  4. Last but not least, the most important for staying fit and healthy is that pregnant women should never smoke, drink or do drugs during pregnancy. If you are a smoker be sure to talk to your doctor about what methods or choices you have to help you quit. If you have had problems with alcohol or drugs you should consult with your doctor as well so you can find if there are recovery programs specifically to help you. Following all of these tips will help you have a safer, happier, healthier pregnancy.
