How To Get Rid of Bacne (Back Acne)

Getting acne on the face is not uncommon, but did you know that you can also get acne on other parts of your body like your neck, chest, and back?  Acne on the back is commonly known as bacne and is caused by bacteria that end up clogging the pores of the skin. The bacteria usually comes from the accumulation of dirt and sweat.  If bacne is not treated immediately, it soon spreads towards other parts of the back.  The time it takes for bacne to go away depends on the individual, but if you keep up the regimen the bacne will eventually disappear.

  1. First, wash your whole body with a gentle cleansing soap. I highly recommend Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash as this is non-comodogenic, meaning it won’t irritate your pores and clog it up further.  Concentrate the soap on the area with bacne, and wait a minute or so to let the soap do its work and get rid of the oil. Rinse the area thoroughly.
  2. Exfoliate your skin using an abrasive sponge like a loofa. Don’t scrub too hard as this will irritate your skin further; scrub lightly and the sponge will do the exfoliating for you.
  3. Dry your skin thoroughly and moisturize with an oil-free lotion, like Clean and Clear Dual Action Moisturizer or Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion.
  4. Wait for the moisturizer to dry, do spot treatment on your bacne by placing acne medication cream on the acne, like little dots.  Since the products mentioned contain salicylic acid to clean and moisturize the area, you can use a different medicine for the acne cream.  Try using 2.5 benzoyl peroxide.  Do not get benzoyl peroxide any higher than that (e.g. 5% or 10%) because this will increase the irritation without diminishing the pimples as effectively.

 Other tips:

If the Neutrogena Body Wash is too expensive for you, there are other brands that carry the same ingredient. Just look at the bottle and see if it contains its active ingredient, 2% salicylic acid.

The moisturizing lotion should also contain salicylic acid, but less than the body wash.  Once your bacne is under control, you can use alpha-hydroxy lotion instead.

If you’re worried that all these different chemicals might exacerbate your bacne, you can try something more natural.  Slice a lemon and rub the slices onto your skin.  Tomatoes work just as well too.  That’s because they contain acid that kills harmful, pimple-causing bacteria.

You can also use oatmeal to get rid of excess oil.  Get a handful of dry flakes and mix together with a small amount of water until it becomes a paste. After your shower, apply the paste onto the area affected by bacne for ten minutes, then rinse off.

Another natural way of treating bacne is to make an exfoliating scrub out of grapefruit.  For this you will need a grapefruit, sugar, and coarse sea salt. Squeeze the grapefruit juice into a bowl and mix in one and a half cups of white sugar and half a cup of sea salt. Massage onto your back, rinse, and pat dry.
