It’s the most stressful time of the year: moving season.

If you don’t play your cards right, you could end up way overspending, missing your moveout day, or even losing some of your moving boxes. Fortunately, enough people have moved over the years that we can learn from their mistakes.

Keep reading to learn some of the best packing tricks and tips for moving, so you don’t have to make the same mistakes everyone else did.

Take a Lesson from Marie Kondo

If you’re being honest with yourself, how many things do you own that you don’t absolutely need or even really want? How much clutter is in your house right now?

The fact is, most of us own way too many things. So many, in fact, that we have dedicated drawers, closets, and garages just to store all of the junk that we think will need one day.

We get it. We all do it.

But moving is stressful enough, and do you really need all of those ketchup packets and chopsticks? Marie Kondo, an expert on decluttering your life, shares a message with us that could change your clutter forever.

The message is simply this: when you pick up an item, does it bring you joy? Does it light some sort of spark inside of you?

No? Throw it out. We promise you won’t miss it.

Label Everything

Once you decide which items are going and which are dumpster food, it’s time to start packing. It’s easy to throw everything together in a box and get through moveout day, but if you don’t organize thoroughly, you’re going to have a terrible time unpacking.

The goal is to separate and label everything.

Dedicate special boxes for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, linen closet, etc. Doing this will seriously decrease the stress of unpacking.

Once you have everything separated, make sure you label all of your boxes as accurately as possible. Consider using color-coded tape for different areas of the house, red for the kitchen or blue for the bathroom.

Several Small — Never One Big

Again, it might be easier to throw everything in one box and just be done with it, but the more organized you are on moveout day, the happier you’ll be on move-in day.

Never pack too many things in one box, as it will get heavy very quickly. It may seem tedious to have several small boxes, but you’ll thank us later when the bottom of your boxes don’t fall out and spill your unmentionables in front of your new neighbors.

Moving Made Easy with These Packing Tricks and Tips

There’s only so much that you can do to prepare for moving, but if you follow these packing tricks and tips, we promise it will soften the blow.

The bottom line is to get down and start packing. Organize, declutter, label, and before you know it, you’ll be in your new home.
