There's no way around it. Moving from one home to another is a stressful, disruptive life experience. In fact, one in five Americans said that moving is even more stressful than planning a wedding!

With this in mind, there are steps you can take to make the transition easier on yourself.

By far the worst thing you can do is go into a move without planning. If you don't know where to start with your moving plans, don't stress, we're here to help!

In this article, we'll lay out a few helpful relocation tips to make your move as smooth as possible.

Now then, let's get started!

1. Budget Moving Costs

The first step in a move or any major life change is to make a budget. Moving can get expensive fast, so you want to do your best to make sure that you don't end up in a tough spot because you weren't prepared.

A great way to save money when moving is to avoid paying for moving boxes. Visit your local grocery and department stores and tell them that you could use a few boxes. You'll be shocked to see how many perfectly good boxes they have lying around!

2. Trash, Donate, Sell, Pack

Before packing a single item, take inventory of your belongings. This may feel tedious, but it truly helps with it comes to packing.

Make four separate piles in each room - trash, donate, sell, and pack. Now, the two categories about which you need to be strictest with yourself are pack and trash.

It's important not to throw anything out that can be donated and used by someone else, and equally important not to pack every single gum wrapper lying around. Trust us, you will be thanking yourself when it comes time to unpack as well.

3. Ask for Help

Don't be shy! Ask your friends and family for help with the move. You can even make it worth their while by offering lunch or desserts, but your loved ones should be more than willing to give you a hand.

Think about anyone who you would gladly help with a large task such as moving and give them a call. Just be courteous to your friends by choosing a non-holiday weekend to do your moving. No one wants to spend their Labor Day weekend hefting boxes!

4. Allow for Overlap

When transitioning into a new home, make sure you're leaving a bit of overlap where you still have the keys to your old place, as well as your new one.

This will cut down on stress, giving you plenty of time to make sure your old residence is clean and empty and let you move into your new home little by little, if need be.

5. Take Your Time Moving In

Whether you're renting or buying, chances are your new home won't be quite as clean as you'd like it to be upon move in. Well, because you've allowed for some overlap, you can take your time moving in!

Don't start putting your boxes in the home the first day you get your keys. Instead, take a day to do a thorough inspection (particularly if you're renting) and deep clean if you need to. You can also snap a few pictures, both for your records and to remember what your new place looked like before you made it your own.

6. Pack an Essentials Box

You've just moved into your new home, you're ready to sleep in your new bedroom for the first time, but you can't find your toothbrush! With so many boxes, it's easy for your essentials to get lost in the shuffle during a move.

That's where an essentials box comes in! All you have to do is pack a box with a change of clothes, any toiletries that you use on a daily basis, and maybe a few snacks for the first night.

Keep this box in a special place, such as the passenger seat of your car. As long as it's far away from the rest of your belongings and you can easily find it when you arrive, you're good to go!

7. Consider Hiring Help

If your friends and family are unavailable on the day of your move, don't tackle the entire move alone! Check online for a highly-rated local moving service and hire some help.

Moving companies are great because they can be as much or as little help as you need. Want someone to come and pack up your entire home, haul it to your new place, and stack the boxes neatly in the garage? You can do it!

Or, if you want to save some money and just need a hand packing up the truck, moving services are perfect for the job!

Use These Relocation Tips to Make Moving a Breeze

Well, there you have it! By keeping these simple relocation tips in mind before and during your move, your transition from one home to the next will be as pain-free as it can be.
