How To Make Scrambled Tofu

Scrambled tofu can be the best substitute to your favorite scrambled eggs if you are a health conscious person. It can be as appetizing as the scrambled eggs minus the huge amount of calories. Read along to get the best tips and steps in making your very own variation of scrambled tofu.

  • Prepare the tofu. Make sure that your tofu is drained and pressed. Sometimes, draining alone does not remove all the excess water from the tofu. Pressing can be done to draw off the remaining water from your main ingredient. To do this, put your tofu on a clean plate and lay another plate above the tofu. Add weight above the covering plate. You can use a small canned good weighing just enough to slightly press the tofu and squeeze out all the water. Pour the extracted water immediately from the plate. It is best to use tofu that has not been frozen. Crumble or mash the tofu using a fork. You can also crumble it manually using your hands. It is your preference to hash it carefully or just chop it slightly to remain chunky.
  • Sauté and season. Cooking scrambled tofu is as easy as cooking scrambled egg. To start with, pour a small amount of oil in a non-sticky pan and stir fry onions until softened. Add mushrooms and sauté for five minutes. Put on some garlic and sauté a little more for two minutes. Put in all other vegetables that you wish to add. Lastly, put in the prepared tofu and stir fry frequently until light brown and slightly moist. If it happens that the tofu sticks into the pan, you can splash some water into it and then continue frying. Season your scrambled tofu with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add nutritional yeast to make it more succulent. Serve immediately.
  • Serving suggestions. Your scrambled tofu can be served with a variety of food. You can serve it with toast to start your day with a healthy breakfast. You can also serve it with tortillas and salsa, guacamole or burrito for snacks. Or if you just want to eat it any time of the day and don’t want it to be bland, you can serve it with potato hash, steamed asparagus or tasty muffins.
  • More or less. Using tofu instead of eggs for your scramble is already an indication that you want fewer calories. You can be consistent with your low-calorie meal. Below are some healthy substitutes:

    Use canola, vegetable, sunflower or olive oil instead of the usual cooking oil.

    Add other healthier vegetables such as green and red bell pepper, spinach, dill, scallions and mushrooms instead of processed meat like bacon and ham.

    You can add cheese but take note that sprinkled cheddar cheese on your finished dish is better than melted cheese.
