How To Build a Corner Desk Unit

A corner desk unit can be a great weekend project. While it takes a little bit of planning and do-it-yourself skill, it will be a great addition and space saver for any study or bedroom.

First, you need to measure the space where the corner desk will be going and begin to plan a design in your head of how you want this desk unit to look. You will need to choose whether or not you want shelves, drawers, or any other extras on your corner desk unit. Building a corner desk unit will also depend on how much knowledge or previous experience you've had. You don't want to take on a project that will be too much work for you. You should draw up a design and make all of your measurements, not once but twice.

Hopefully you have all the proper nails and saws to complete the work that you'll need to do. If not, you'll have to purchase a jigsaw and some heavy duty screws. You'll also need to decide whether or not you plan on attaching your desk unit to the wall. If so, you'll need some wall mounts.

The next step is to see how much wood you'll need and go to your local home improvement store and purchase that wood. Oak and maple are common types of wood to use for furniture, but you'll probably choose your wood based upon your budget and liking. If you're doing to paint the desk, the color of the wood isn't going to be as important as the sturdiness. You'll want to choose a wood that will last a long time and is able to withstand common wear and tear. If you have any questions, ask the helpful people at the hardware store or lumberyard.

Make sure that if you're attaching your desk unit to the wall you find the studs. If you're painting your desk unit, you'll want to make sure you paint it before you attach it to the wall to ensure you get all the spots. You can paint the desk unit any color to match the decor of the room. If necessary you might need to cut a hole somewhere in the corner desk unit so that computer wires and cords can run through to a power outlet.

After your corner desk unit is completed, painted, and set up, you can start using it for your computer, papers, and books. If you have chosen to make multiple shelves a part of the desk unit, you can put your printer, scanner, or fax machine on the shelves. Utilizing the corner space of your home or apartment will leave you more room for other furniture or entertaining guests.
