How To Make an Origami Cat

Origami is a Japanese art form that involves paper folding.  Oru is the Japanese word for "folding" and gami is the Japanese word for "paper." Origami is composed of different creases and folds that are used to make animals, flowers, designs, and various objects.  There is typically no gluing or cutting involved.

To make an origami object, you usually begin with a square piece of paper that may have different colors or designs on each side.  This article will tell you how to make a simple origami cat.  This cat is composed of two parts: the body and the head.  It is very easy to construct, just make sure you crease well.  You will need two sheets of square paper that are white on one side and colored on the other side, a marker, a pair of wiggly (googly) eyes, and glue.

Making the Head of the Origami Cat:

  1. Begin with one piece of paper and lay it so that the colored side is facing down.  Fold the square in half along both diagonals. Open the paper out so it lays flat.
  2. Fold one of the corners down to the center.  Make sure you crease thoroughly.
  3. Flip the whole piece over.
  4. Fold up the bottom corner so that it is halfway toward the center.
  5. Flip the whole piece over a second time.
  6. Fold down the top half of paper on the beginning crease line.
  7. Fold down the top right corner so that the top edge will line up with the center crease line.
  8. Repeat step 7 for the top left corner.
  9. Fold both of the flaps up diagonally to make the ears of the cat.
  10. Fold the middle point down in between the ears to make the top of the cat's head.
  11. Flip the whole piece over.
  12. Fold down the middle point a just a little bit to make the nose.
  13. With a marker, draw in the cat's mouth.
  14. Glue on the pair of wiggly eyes. The origami cat's head is now finished.

Making the Body of the Origami Cat:

  1. Begin with the colored side facing down.  Fold the piece diagonally in half and crease well.
  2. Fold the right and left corners to the center so that the two edges meet the center crease.  Your piece should now be the shape of a kite.
  3. Fold the whole piece in half on the crease.
  4. Fold up the thinnest or narrowest point at an angle to make the tail.  You can adjust the angle to make the type of tail you want.
  5. Fold the left corner to make a straight chest and a neck.
  6. Flip the whole piece over and glue the head onto the neck.  Your origami cat is now finished!
