How To Choose the Best Floor Mop

That floor won't mop itself, so it's time to get to it.  But which is the best mop to use?  There are so many choices it can be confusing.

One thing to consider is the type of floor you have.  Here are some of the most popular types and the mops that work best on them:

Tile floors can be cleaned with a sponge mop or a string mop.  Both do a good job on the uneven surface of a tile floor.  They can get at the grout between the tiles.  A sponge mop is good for getting into corners, but it balks at going into small areas.  The string mop can squeeze into tight spaces such as behind the toilet.

Vinyl floors can also be cleaned with a sponge or string mop.  But vinyl floors are easily scratched, and both mops have metal parts that come near the floor.  It's better to use a flat mop such as a Swiffer WetJet to be safe.

Linoleum floors can be cleaned with a sponge or string mop, but then should be dried with a shine mop.  A shine mop is a mop with a terry-cloth head.

New hardwood floors are usually cleaned without water.  A dust mop with a lambskin or microfiber cover does a good job on hardwood floors.  Be sure the mop you use has no sharp edges on it that can scratch the surface of your floors.  If you do wet-mop your hardwood floors, don't do it very often and dry them afterward with a dry mop so they don't warp.

If you have old hardwood floors, be even more careful about putting water on them.  Be sure to dry them thoroughly if you wet-mop them, since they're even more likely to warp.

Cork floors need damp mopping about once a month, but you should use very little water.  Use a sponge mop so you can wring most of the moisture out of it.

Another consideration is convenience.  String mops are the hardest to wring out.  Some have replaceable heads, but replacing the heads is messy.  Also, many people don't like mops that require buckets.  They prefer something like the Swiffer Wet Jet that dispenses the floor cleaner.

Mops can vary in cost.  String or sponge mops  can cost five dollars and a Swiffer twenty-five dollars.

But whichever mop you choose, you should replace it often.  You want to get the most out of your mopping.
