Questions You Should Ask a Local Roofing Company Before Hiring Them

Looking for a local roofing company to install a new roof on the top of your home? You shouldn't have any trouble tracking one down.

At last count, there were more than 100,000 roofing companies operating throughout the country. That means you should be able to find at least a few great options in your immediate area.

Before you bring local roofers on board to replace your home's current roof, though, you should make sure that they're the right roofing contractors for the job. Not every roofing contractor is going to be cut out to do the work that you need done.

One way to narrow down your options and hone in on the best roofers in the business is by asking the roofing companies in your city or town a series of questions. Their answers will shed some much-needed light on whether or not they're going to be the right option for you.

Here are some of the kinds of questions you should ask a local roofing company prior to hiring them for roofing installation.

How Long Have You Been in Business?

If you're going to hire a local roofing company to install a new roof for you, you want to know that they know what they're doing. You don't want to hire an inexperienced company that is just getting its feet wet when it comes to roof installations.

Don't be afraid to ask local roofers how much experience they have. With a little luck, you should be able to find a roofing company that has at least a decade worth of experience, if not more.

Experienced roofers will be able to come in and remove your old roof for you in the right way. They'll also be able to put your new roof into place and make it look great in a reasonable amount of time.

You'll sleep better at night knowing that you have an experienced bunch of roofers working on your roof. It'll be well worth the extra effort that you'll have to put into finding a roofing team that has been around the block and learned a thing or two along the way.

How Many Roofs Have You Installed Over the Years?

A word of advice: Just because a local roofing company tells you that they've been in business for years now doesn't always mean that they have the experience that you're looking for. Outside of asking them how long they've been around, ask them how many roofs they've installed, too.

If possible, you should even try and look at some of their roofing samples to see what kind of work they do. They should be prepared to show you photos of roofs that they've installed in the past.

By doing this, a roofing company will instill confidence in you and make you feel good about choosing them. They should have plenty of photos of roofs to show you.

Do You Perform All Your Own Work?

You might be surprised to see how many roofing companies pick up jobs and then pass them along to subcontractors. This has become an all too familiar sight in the roofing industry.

You obviously want to know who is going to be working on your roof at all times. If you wanted some other company from across town to install a roof for you, you would have hired them to do it and not the local roofing company that you went with.

Make sure that you ask a roofing company whether or not they're going to be the ones actually installing your new roof for you. You shouldn't agree to work with them if they're not going to take a hands-on approach to your roof installation project.

What Types of Roofs Do You Specialize in Installing?

There are so many different types of roofs that you can install on your home. Some of the most popular kinds of roofing these days are:

  • Asphalt shingle roofs
  • Wood shake roofs
  • Tile roofs
  • Metal roofs
  • And more!

If you have a specific type of roof in mind for your home, it's going to be important for your local roofing company to specialize in installing that particular kind of roof. If they don't, you should look elsewhere for a company to set you up with roofing services.

What Kind of Roof Would You Recommend for My Home?

There are some homeowners who aren't sure which type of roof they should install on top of their homes. They're torn between the different options that they have and can't seem to settle on just one.

A local roofing company should be ready, willing, and able to help you make a final decision. They should be prepared to lay out all your different options for you and talk to you about the pros and cons of each one.

They should also be prepared to take a look at your home to see which roofing option might work best on it. While it'll ultimately be up to you to decide which type of roof you want, they shouldn't be shy about making suggestions based on the layout of your roof.

Avoid working with a roofing company if they get annoyed when you start hemming and hawing over which type of roof you want. They should understand that you have a big decision sitting in front of you and do everything in their power to make it easier for you.

Are You Fully Licensed and Insured?

This is a question that a lot of people like to ask right at the beginning while speaking with a local roofing company. Reason being, there is absolutely no way that you should even consider working with local roofers if they tell you that they're either unlicensed or uninsured.

If a roofing company isn't licensed, it means that they haven't taken the proper steps to legitimize their business. It could leave you in a tough spot if something goes wrong during your roofing installation.

If a roofing company isn't insured, meanwhile, it means that they're not being as responsible as they could and should be when it comes to protecting themselves and their customers. You could end up with a big medical bill or a huge repair bill if a mistake is made during roof installation and your roofers aren't insured.

With these things in mind, you should always, always, always ask a roofing company for proof of a business license and insurance. You'll be glad you did later on if anything goes wrong.

Do You Offer Free Quotes?

Prior to allowing a roofing contractor to install a new roof on your home, you're going to want to have them visit your home and tell you about how much it's going to cost to replace your old roof. Most roofers will have no problem coming to your home to set you up with a free quote.

There are, however, some roofers who will balk at the idea of providing you with a free quote. They'll charge you a service fee to take a trip out to your home to tell you how much a new roof is going to cost you.

You're welcome to pay for a roofing quote if you want to. But most of the best roofers won't make you do this. They'll happily extend a free quote to you so that you can make a smart decision when installing a new roof on your home.

How Much Do You Typically Charge for New Roofs?

On average, homeowners usually pay somewhere between $11,000 and $17,000 for new roofs for their homes. But the price that you pay to local roofers is going to depend on so many different factors.

The size of your roof is going to help to determine what a new roof will cost you. The type of roofing materials that you choose to use will also come into play. And even something like the urgency with which you need to have a new roof installed is something that's going to factor into the equation.

You should try to get some sense of what a roofing company charges for their roofs. You can find this out either by asking them directly or by reading online reviews for them to see where they fall when it comes to price as compared to other companies.

By inquiring about the cost of a new roof, you can locate roofing contractors that are going to provide you with affordable roofing options.

Do You Provide Warranties on Your Roofs?

The last thing you want to do is install a new roof on your home today and then have to repair it or, worse, replace it within just a few years. Once you have a new roof on your home, you shouldn't have to worry about doing anything to it again anytime soon.

If you do need to make repairs to it at some point, though, it'll be nice to have a warranty on your roof. Most roofing companies have started to offer extended warranties on their roofs to entice people to buy them.

Check with a local roofing company about what kind of warranty they're going to give you on a new roof if you agree to buy one through them. They should be willing to stand behind their roofs and the work that they do.

If local roofers won't do this, it'll show you that you need to find a roofing contractor that will. It'll prevent you from having to pay an arm and a leg later on if something happens to your roof.

What Do Your Past Clients Have to Say About You?

A few moments ago, we touched on how you should try to read online reviews for roofing contractors to see how much they charge. But you should also talk with local roofers themselves about what kind of reputation they have in their community.

Successful roofers are usually more than happy to toot their own horn by posting positive testimonials from their past clients on their website. They'll also provide you with strong endorsements from clients if you would like them to.

If you can't find a bunch of online reviews and/or testimonials on a roofing company's website, ask them to share some with you. They should be able to show you what their past clients think about them and their roofing services.

Are You Available to Install a Roof for Me Right Now?

If you need to have a new roof installed on the top of your home sometime within the next couple of weeks, you might have a difficult time doing it through certain local roofers. They might be all booked up for the foreseeable future and unable to stick to the schedule that you've created for yourself.

The only way to find out if they're going to be able to meet your demands is by asking them what their schedule looks like. They should be able to tell you how soon they can stick a new roof on your home.

You don't want to fall in love with a local roofing company only to discover that they're going to be busy installing roofs for the next two months and unable to get to your home anytime soon. You should make sure they have enough availability to install a roof for you sometime in the not-too-distant future.
