How To Be a Good Defensive Back

Quarterbacks are always known for being the most popular players on football teams. Whether the teams are in college, high school or pro, these are often the most-cheered for member of the team. They are also usually the highest paid. Football, however, is a team sport. And there will always be other players that support the team, whether in a defensive or offensive role.

Defensive backs are important to a team in the sense that they are the ones equipped to handle any position. Put them in one position and they will perform and they can perform. They can actually run the game themselves. However, it isn’t just what they can do that can win them the game. Coupled with the athleticism that a defensive back has, he also must have the determination, the strength and the hard work in him. That’s what makes a player win his game.

Here are the following things that a defensive back may try to do in order to be at his best out there.

  • Make sure you have a killer back pedal. Defensive backs usually flank out when they have weak back pedals because this is where they are most usually caught. In this position, it’s important to know to stay on the balls of your feet. If the balls of the feet touch the ground during a back pedal, it’s done the wrong way and you could trip on your feet. You should also develop how you use your hips. Keep in mind that while re-positioning from a back pedal to a normal stance, hip positioning would be important. Practice doing these so as to quicken your speed and to keep pace with the wide receivers.
  • Jog every day. Jog non-stop for at least 45 minutes a day. Include sprints and jog from side-to-side to improve stamina and cardio-vascular strength.
  • Go to the gym regularly. You will need intense strength training and a good weight and exercise program to increase your speed and leaping ability. Your weight program should be more focused in strengthening your upper body. Spend time with free weights and machines to enhance your upper body muscles. Insert some squats and leg raises in your daily routine. You may also do these exercises during your jogging exercise.
  • Be open to constructive criticism. It is often said that “our biggest critics are ourselves.” Learn from your mistakes and see what goes on while you’re on the field by watching videos of your team playing. Find points of improvement and tell yourself to do better the next time. All your hard work will pay off if you realize that you need to make yourself a better player.
  • Be a good observer. Study how your opponents move and dance around you. If you know where they go and what they plan on doing then you will be one step ahead of them and 10 points ahead of the game.

In every football team, each position plays a particular role, and your training will have to depend on this. Whichever position you hold in the game, though, what’s important is the winning attitude and teamwork.
